Deadheads flock to San Francisco's 'Grateful Dead House' after Phil Lesh's passing.

  1. SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — On Friday, fans gathered at the Haight-Ashbury home of the Grateful Dead to pay tribute to founding member Phil Lesh.

  2. "They've had such a profound impact on our lives. I prefer to focus on the happy memories," said Joan Durbin, who traveled from Atlanta with her husband.

  3. "When we heard about Phil's passing, we knew we had to come here to honor him," she continued. "It's like watching your friends grow older—eventually, people start to pass on, but the music endures," Mark Durbin added.

  4. Meanwhile, music played from a Volkswagen van across the street.

  5. "It’s surreal. I knew this day would come, but I didn’t expect it so soon," said Johnny Greavu.
Phil Lesh, the bassist and founding member of the legendary Bay Area band The Grateful Dead, has passed away at the age of 84.

The band became a symbol of the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

Michael Seiler reflected, "If you look at that house and think about the people who have walked up and down those steps during those special years, it truly was a remarkable moment in time."

Greavu noted, "Deadheads include the runaways, the outcasts, and the addicts—a whole community of misfits. For many, it feels like home."

The band's music not only defined a generation but also inspired countless fans over the years. Seiler added, "The energy from that time is still alive. We’re sitting in a van, and people are walking by who know this music; it never fades."
