Freddie Freeman of the Los Angeles Dodgers made history with a walk-off grand slam in the tenth inning, leading his team to a thrilling 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the 2024 World Series at Dodger Stadium on October 25, 2024.

With the Dodgers trailing 3-2 and facing their final out, Freeman stepped up and launched the first pitch he saw into the right field grandstand, igniting a frenzy among the more than 50,000 fans in attendance. This moment marked the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history.

The scene echoed one of baseball’s most iconic moments: Kirk Gibson’s legendary walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, which also took place at Dodger Stadium. Both players, battling injuries, found themselves in similarly dramatic situations, with Freeman’s homer landing in the same grandstand as Gibson’s 36 years prior.

As teammates showered him with cold water in celebration, Freeman exclaimed, “I like that!” He reflected on the moment, saying, “That’s stuff you dream about as a kid in the backyard. It’s a dream come true, but that’s just one. We have three more to go.”

Mookie Betts drove in Ohtani with a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the 9th inning, Gleyber Torres of the Yankees connected for what seemed like a go-ahead home run, but the umpires ruled that a fan interfered by reaching over the wall to catch the ball. Torres was awarded a ground rule double and ended up stranded at second when Aaron Judge popped out to conclude the inning.

The game went to extra innings, where Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm singled, then stole both second and third before scoring on a fielder’s choice, giving New York a 10th-inning lead.

But the excitement at Chavez Ravine was just beginning.

Fireworks lit up the sky during the national anthem as fans captured moments inside Dodger Stadium ahead of Game 1. In a dramatic twist, Los Angeles Dodgers' Freddie Freeman hit a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning, leading his team to a 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees on October 25.

Freeman celebrated with his teammates as Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes walked off the field after surrendering the decisive homer. Earlier, Alex Verdugo made a spectacular diving catch against a foul ball hit by Shohei Ohtani.

In the sixth inning, Giancarlo Stanton's two-run homer had briefly put the Yankees ahead 2-1. Dodgers outfielder Enrique Hernández scored the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly from Will Smith in the fifth.

This marked a historic matchup, as these teams last met in the World Series in 1981, a series won by the Dodgers. The atmosphere was charged, with fans singing along to a Mariachi band tribute for the late Fernando Valenzuela, a Dodgers legend who passed away on October 22 at 63. Country artist Brad Paisley performed the national anthem, setting the stage for an unforgettable Game 1
